The NBA 2023-2024 Season is less than a week old and a major blockbuster trade has occured. James Harden has finally got his trade demand granted to the LA Clippers. The Clippers were Harden’s specific trade destination since his initial June trade request. The Philadelphia 76ers went against their original decision to keep Harden on the team. The 76ers will now prioritize on the development of rising star Tyrese Maxay following James Harden’s departure. The Philadelphia 76ers would receive multiple draft picks, along with third year guard Kenyan Martin Jr. and veterans Robert Covington, Nick Battum & Marcus Morris. The LA Clippers would also acquire PJ Tucker in the James Harden trade. The LA Clippers could be seen as the biggest winner of the blockbuster trade. The Clippers get their third star to pair with All Stars Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. They add PJ Tucker to the bench to improve the team’s depth. They are now ranked the fifth betting favorite to win the NBA 2024 Championship. The Sixers will use these newly acquired veteran role players to mix and match with their second unit bench. The Sixers draft picks are expected to be used as 2024 trade deadline assets. The Sixers hope to use these draft picks to acquire a disgruntled star from an NBA seller at the deadline. It is unknown how the 76ers reigning MVP Joell Embiid feels about the blockbuster trade. The 76ers front office must do whatever they can to make Embiid feel pleased in Philadelphia. The risk of losing Embiid could force the 76ers into a massive rebuild. Who is the overall winner of the Harden trade? Can James Harden win a championship with the Clippers? Today begins the early stages of trade season in the NBA. Players who signed during the 2024 offseason are now eligable for trades. Several contendering NBA teams are now in the mix for trade upgrades to their playoff caliber rosters. The question becomes why would a team sell players with over 50 games remaining in the 2024-2025 season. The answer is simple: to tank. The NBA 2025 draft lottery is 5 months away but that wont stop many NBA general managers from selling high or low. Rebuilding NBA teams have a chance to impact their draft lottery odds by selling as soon as possible. Selling early often leads to impacting the number of game losses.
