The Wild Card round of the MLB playoff has come and gone. There were four total Wild Card series sweeps. Each series had its moments of interest and concern. The Texas Rangers pulled off a series upset against the 99 win Tampa Bay Rays. The Rangers outscored the Rays 11-1 in the two games combined. The Rays were outmatched and outplayed on every level of the game. Their offense missed key players including All-Star shortstop Wander Franco, outfielder Luke Raley and former All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe. The loss of these three hitters played a major role in the Rays complete lack of offense. The Rays have now lost 7 straight playoff games dating back to the 2021 Division Series. The Toronto Blue Jays were very similar to their rival Tampa Bay Rays. The Blue Jays were eliminated by the Minnesota Twins in surprising fashion. The Twins broke an 18 playoff game losing streak and won their first playoff series since 2002. Both Wild Card games were close but ended in the same result for the Blue Jays. Their offense scored 2 total runs against the Twins pitching. The Blue Jays have now been swept in each of the three years since making the playoffs in 2020. They have not won a playoff game since 2016. The Philadelphia Phillies swept the Miami Marlins in dominant fashion. The series was truly never close and could be considered a miss match. The Marlins were missing their ace starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara but that was the least of the their playoff problems. The Marlins were badly outscored 11-2 in the two game series against the Phillies. It was a quiet and forgettable series for their best three hitters Luis Arraez, Jorge Soler and Jazz Chisholm. The Marlins have scored 1 run or few in the their last 6 playoffs games dating back to the 2020 Division Series. Lastly, the Milwaukee Brewers were upset by the 84 win Arizona Diamondbacks in 2 games. They blew multple leads including a 3-0 and 2-0 lead
during the 2 game sweep. The Brewers offense would start both games hot but go cold against the Diamondback’s bullpen. The Brewers have not won a playoff series since the 2018 Division Series. What will the aftermath be for these four eliminated playoff teams. Will any of the teams managers be let go? The future will always look questionable when a team is swept out of the first round.
