There are long shots in every sport. A long shot is a team who is not mathematically eliminated from contention and has a slim chance of hope towards making the playoffs. With 25 games or less to play, there are quite a few playoff long shots. In terms of being a Wild Card, the first two wild cards in both leagues are nearly settled. The first American League Wild Card will either be the Tampa Bay Rays or the Baltimore Orioles. The second Wild Card could either be the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers or Houston Astros. The Toronto Blue Jays are half a game behind the Texas Rangers for the last Wild Card. The long shots in the American League are the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Red Sox and New York Yankees are 4.5 and 8 games behind of the Rangers. The Cleveland Guardians could also be considered a long shot of winning the AL Central Division. They are 6 games behind the Minnesota Twins. The New York Yankees have a easier remaining schedule compared to the Boston Red Sox remaining schedule. The Cleveland Guardians remaining schedule is more evenly balanced towards teams above and below .500. The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs are the anticipated first and second National League Wild Cards. The National League long shots are the Sandiego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and Washington Nationals. These 4 teams are very close from each other in the standings but range from 6.5 to 9 games back of the final Wild Card. These long shots in both leagues must play nearly perfect baseball for the final month of the MLB season. Long shots do not happen very often but the best prime example is the 2021 St. Louis Cardinals, who went 22-7 in September. How will the final month of the MLB season play out for these teams? Will any of these long shots stand a chance? The dog days of summer are coming to a close. It is now getting into crunch time.
