Today marks the end of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Germany are the gold medal champions. Serbia finished in second place and Canada finished with a third place bronze medal. Team USA entered the FIBA World Cup as favorites to win gold medals. They featured a combination of young NBA All-Stars and rising stars in Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Brandon Ingram and Jarren Jackson JR. Their second unit off the bench consisted of up and coming stars in Austin Reeves, Paolo Banchero, Walker Kessler and Tyrese Haliburton. The US was perfect through exhibition games and showed alot of promise heading into the tournament. The team showed the ability to score the ball well and play defense at a high level. The problem for the team was lack in size while rebounding the ball. US Coach Steve Kerr would be forced to play Bancharo as a small ball Center whenever Jackson Jr got himself into foul trouble. The weakness in the Center position was very noticable when Bobby Portis and Walker Kessler were given the backup Center roles as the FiBA games progressed. USA would lose the rebound battle against Team Germany in finals clincher match up. The amount of offensive rebounds were crucial for the German team. They were more clutch down the stretch and exposed the weakness from team USA. Turnovers would also play a big role in team USA’s FIBA struggles. What had began to look so promising faded into a dream.Team USA would show star potentials from players such Anthony Edwards, Mikal Bridges and Austin Reeves but would lack winning a single medal. Team USA will seek redemption in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Can Team USA men’s basketball bounce back next year? How different will the mens basketball olympic roster look? Through the good and the bad, NBA players will always appreciate the experience in international tournaments.
